Why Primary School Kids Need Maths Tutors

By the time your child reaches Year 5 or 6, the foundation for their entire secondary school maths journey is already being laid. It's a sobering thought — and one that's backed up by decades of educational research.
What the Research Tells Us
A landmark 2007 study by Dr Greg Duncan and colleagues, published in Developmental Psychology, followed 35,000 children across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The findings were striking: early mathematics skills were the single strongest predictor of later academic achievement — stronger than reading skills, attention, and socio-emotional behaviour.
Children who entered school with strong number sense were significantly more likely to excel not just in maths, but across all academic subjects through to high school.
New Zealand's Maths Problem
New Zealand's PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) results tell a troubling story. In 2000, NZ ranked 4th in the world for mathematics. By 2022, that ranking had dropped to 27th — a significant decline that has alarmed educators, parents, and policymakers alike.
Behind these numbers are hundreds of thousands of children who are falling through the cracks — not because they lack ability, but because early gaps aren't being caught and filled before they compound.
The Confidence Spiral
Here's how it typically unfolds: a child struggles with a concept — fractions, place value, basic multiplication — and doesn't fully grasp it before the class moves on. They feel confused, then embarrassed. They start to believe "maths just isn't for me." That belief makes them avoid maths-related challenges. Avoidance leads to more gaps. More gaps lead to more confusion.
By high school, this child isn't just behind academically — they're emotionally closed off to maths. Reversing that takes much more work than catching it early would have.
What Primary Tutoring Actually Does
One-on-one tutoring at the primary level isn't about drilling times tables. It's about:
- Building genuine number sense — understanding why maths works, not just how to follow steps
- Filling specific gaps — identifying exactly where the confusion started and addressing it directly
- Creating positive associations — making maths feel achievable, even enjoyable, before negative patterns set in
- Giving children a head start — some families use tutoring not because their child is struggling, but to keep them engaged and ahead
The Compounding Effect
Maths is uniquely sequential. Unlike history or English, where a new topic is largely independent, maths builds relentlessly on what came before. Fractions rely on multiplication. Algebra relies on fractions. Calculus relies on algebra. A gap at Year 4 doesn't stay a Year 4 gap — it grows into a Year 8 gap, then a Year 11 gap.
This is why early intervention is so powerful. One term of targeted tutoring in primary school can prevent years of struggle later on.
When Should You Start?
The honest answer is: as soon as you notice your child hesitating, avoiding, or expressing frustration with maths. There's no age that's too young for a positive maths experience — and no gap that's too small to address.
