Common Questions About Maths Tutoring

Everything parents ask before booking a first session.

How do I know if my child needs a maths tutor?+
Key signs include: grades that have dropped or plateaued, visible anxiety around maths homework or tests, avoidance of maths-related activities, consistent need for help with homework, a teacher flagging concerns, or your child expressing that they 'can't do maths'. You don't need all of these — even two or three is worth acting on. The quiz above is designed to give you a clearer picture based on your specific situation.
What age should I get my child a maths tutor?+
The earlier the better. Research consistently shows that maths foundations set in primary school are the strongest predictor of later academic success. That said, it's never too late — I tutor students from Year 1 right through to Year 13, IB, Cambridge, and A-Levels. If your child is in senior school with upcoming exams, please don't wait.
My child says they're just 'not a maths person' — can tutoring help?+
Yes — and this belief is almost always wrong. In 13 years of tutoring, I've worked with hundreds of students who were convinced they couldn't do maths. In nearly every case, the issue wasn't ability — it was gaps that had compounded, or negative experiences that had knocked their confidence. One-on-one tutoring addresses both the academic gaps and the confidence deficit simultaneously.
How much does maths tutoring cost in Auckland?+
My standard rate is $100 per hour. For families who commit to 10 sessions, I offer a discounted bundle rate — ask when you get in touch. After-school classes and holiday programmes for primary and intermediate students have separate pricing.
Does online maths tutoring actually work?+
Yes — and the evidence backs this up. I tutor students across New Zealand online, and outcomes are comparable to in-person sessions. All you need is a device and an internet connection. For some students, the comfort of being in their own home actually improves focus and reduces anxiety.
My child is in Year 12 or 13 — is it too late?+
No. I work with senior students regularly, including those heading into NCEA Level 3, IB, Cambridge, and A-Levels. It does take more intensive work to close gaps at this stage, but it's absolutely achievable. Many of my most satisfying outcomes have come from students who started in Year 12 or 13 convinced they would fail — and left with Merit or Excellence grades.
What maths curricula do you cover?+
I cover the full NZ curriculum from Year 1–13, NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 (including NZ Scholarship), IB Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation, both HL and SL), Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level Mathematics, and UK A-Level Mathematics. If you're unsure whether I cover your child's curriculum, just ask.
